The French cities of Paris and the Marseille area have been classified as "active zones" for COVID-19 disease by the government on August 14, 2020, giving regional authorities extended powers to impose local restrictions.
Coronavirus Breaking News
The coronavirus disease COVID-19 is currently reaching pandemic levels in various countries.
Innovative platforms such as nucleic acid (DNA and RNA), virus-like particle, peptide, viral vector (replicating and non-replicating), recombinant protein, live attenuated virus, and, inactivated virus development studies are currently focused on producing a COVID-19 disease preventive vaccine. Over 480 clinical trial, patient recruitment projects are sponsored by Antidote.
A pregnancy study published in Open Forum Infectious Diseases on August 13, 2020, reviewed 11,308 cases of SARS-CoV-2 infections and/or COVID-19 disease when pregnant showed that health outcomes were generally favorable for both the mothers and newborns. Maternal and neonatal survival were reassuring (98%) and (99%), respectively.
However, of those expecting mothers reporting disease severity, (21%) were classified as severe/critical.
In the USA, there have been 5,228,817 confirmed cases of COVID-19 disease detected through U.S. public health surveillance systems in 50 states and the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, reported the U.S. CDC as of August 14, 2020.
Furthermore, the CDC confirmed 166,317 coronavirus related fatalities during 2020. According to the New York Times, about 41% of these fatalities are related to nursing home residents and/or staff.
The U.S. FDA warned consumers and healthcare professionals on August 12, 2020, about certain hand sanitizer products that are labeled to contain ethanol or isopropyl alcohol, but have tested positive for 1-propanol contamination. Not to be confused with 2-propanol/isopropanol/isopropyl alcohol, 1-propanol is not an acceptable ingredient for hand sanitizer products marketed in the USA, and can be toxic, and life-threatening when ingested.
The U.S CDC updated their coronavirus guidance on August 3, 2020, suggesting that people who have recovered from COVID-19 related infections can reduce their social-distancing efforts for the next 3-months, because of limited immunity.
The NPR said on August 14, 2020, it has surveyed various US state health departments about their contact tracing programs. The latest survey was completed in late July, in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. NPR highlighted what a few states are learning, such as New Jersey, where nearly half of cases refuse to provide names of contacts; and Louisiana, which discloses where coronavirus transmissions are happening, such as in bars and casinos.
The history of smallpox holds a unique place in medicine. One of the deadliest diseases known to humans, it is also the only human disease to have been eradicated by vaccination. Smallpox was spread by close contact with the sores or respiratory droplets of an infected person, similar to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus of 2019.
Over history, leaders were able to help end smallpox pandemics through vaccination campaigns.
In 1768, Russian empress Catherine the Great volunteered to be inoculated against smallpox in an effort to show her subjects that the emerging medical technique was safe, reported the Financial Times on August 13, 2020.
Then, a few years later in 1775, General George Washington took command of the Continental Army when America was fighting a 2-front war: one for independence, and a second for survival against smallpox. Because Washington knew the ravages of the disease firsthand, he understood that the smallpox virus, then an invisible enemy, could cripple his army and end the war before it began. He too was inoculated to display his leadership.
As COVID-19 disease preventive vaccines become available, which leaders will lead by example?
During the 1918 H1N1 influenza pandemic, there were about 50 million influenza-related fatalities worldwide, including 675,000 in the USA, reported a study published in JAMA on August 13, 2020. In this study, excess flu deaths in New York City (NYC) were compared with fatalities during the initial period of the COVID-19 disease outbreak in 2020.
This cohort study found that the absolute increase in deaths over baseline (excess mortality) observed during the peak of the 1918 influenza pandemic was higher than. but comparable to, that observed during the first 2-months of the COVID-19 outbreak in NYC.
One difference between 1918 and 2020 is a majority of NYC's coronavirus related fatalities occurred in nursing homes. More than 6,610 fatalities, which represents about 20% of all NYC fatalities, have been confirmed by the NYTimes, as of August 13, 2020.
Nationwide, at least 41% of all COVID-19 related fatalities occurred at nursing homes and other long-term care facilities during 2020.
'If contact tracing apps are following Gartner’s famous hype cycle, it’s hard to avoid the conclusion they are now firmly in the “trough of disillusionment," said an MIT Technology article published on August 10, 2020. There are apps highly ranked in MIT Technology Review’s COVID Tracing Tracker, such as Ireland’s app, which has one of the world’s best adoption rates, with 37% of the population downloaded the app in its first week.
Now that the state of Virginia has launched its digital-contact-tracing app called COVIDWise, Americans will learn first 'hand' how these apps help reduce the spreading of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
According to Reuters, VA Governor Ralph Northam said, “No one is tracking you. None of your personal information is saved.”
Researchers in the state of Maryland identified the key risk factors for severe illness from COVID-19 disease in a study published in PLOS on August 12, 2020. They found both diabetes and kidney disease were accurate predictors of serious outcomes in older hospitalized patients. The COVID-19 patients had an average length of stay of 11 days, required ICU care in 31% of cases, and had a 25% mortality rate.
These medical center researchers strongly suggest 'early patient identification may lead to improved outcomes in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.'
To help resolve the nursing-home catastrophe in the USA -- about 38% of all coronavirus related fatalities -- the U.S. federal government announced on August 13, 2020, it had shipped 1,846 rapid point-of-care testing devices to more than 950 nursing homes across the country.
On your next visit to the Houston Minute Maid Park, baseball fans can easily schedule a free coronavirus test. The Houston Astros and Texas Division of Emergency Management have teamed up to offer 2,000 free COVID-19 tests per day, seven days a week. These COVID-19 tests are mouth swab tests that do not require assistance.
"The State of Texas continues to work diligently to increase access to testing in communities that need it most," stated Governor Greg Abbott. "We are proud to partner with the Houston Astros to provide more testing in the city of Houston."

Data published by the U.S. CDC on August 14, 2020, suggest that a substantial number of COVID-19 cases in Oregon have gone undiagnosed --- was approximately 10 times the measured cumulative COVID-19 incidence obtained by nucleic acid testing --- and that a large portion of Oregon’s population remains susceptible to COVID-19 infection.
These findings are similar to those reported in a recent survey in the neighboring state of Idaho.
The European Commission (EC) announced on August 13, 2020, that it has concluded exploratory talks with Johnson & Johnson (J&J) to purchase a potential vaccine against COVID-19 being produced by Janssen Pharmaceutical research teams. The EC said it anticipates that once the J&J Ad26.COV2-S preventive vaccine candidate has proven to be safe and effective, the EC would have a contractual framework in place for the initial purchase of 200 million doses on behalf of all Member States, and could further purchase up to an additional 200 million vaccine doses from J&J.
These 400 million vaccine doses trail the U.S. government's aggregated purchase commitments which have reached about 800 million, as of August 12, 2020.
