Researchers in the state of Maryland identified the key risk factors for severe illness from COVID-19 disease in a study published in PLOS on August 12, 2020. They found both diabetes and kidney disease were accurate predictors of serious outcomes in older hospitalized patients. The COVID-19 patients had an average length of stay of 11 days, required ICU care in 31% of cases, and had a 25% mortality rate.
These medical center researchers strongly suggest 'early patient identification may lead to improved outcomes in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.'
