Pennsylvania-based Halberd Corporation reported its research team developed a 2nd monoclonal antibody against Covid-19 SARS 2 disease antigens paving the way for the development of a potentially more effective nasal spray. Dr. Mitchell S. Felder, a Halberd consultant, stated on November 5, 2020, a provisional patent application for a nasal spray utilizing the antibodies generated to date against the Covid-19 virus spike protein, along with antibodies against ACE2 receptors, and Neuropilin-1 has been filed.

This approach should eliminate or reduce Covid-19 viral load, which concomitantly greatly reduces clinical manifestations, with what should be a statistically significant reduction in Covid-19 morbidity and mortality.

A study published by PLOS One on November 3, 2020, found substantial age-related variability in COVID-19 related fatalities. These researchers report increased mortality risks due to shortness of breath and smoking were higher in studies with patients 60 years or younger.

This finding suggests the need for specific attention to younger patients who have a pulmonary impairment.

A study based in Italy and published by EBioMedicne on November 3, 2020, indicates that COVID-19 represents a unique pathology, distinct from other causes of acute respiratory distress syndrome (pneumonia).

'The long-term persistence of infected cells and the major structural changes detectable in the lungs after several weeks could represent the anatomical substrate for long-term complications in infected patients who survive the acute phase,' stated these researchers.

'We propose that several of the clinical characteristics that set COVID-19 apart from other interstitial types of pneumonia are not attributable to pneumocyte death as a consequence viral replication but to the persistence of virus-infected, Spike-expressing cells in the lungs of the infected individuals.'

The UK's Vaccine Taskforce Chair Kate Bingham was reported by The Telegraph on November 4, 2020, now estimates that the UK will receive about 4 million AZD1222 vaccine doses from AstraZeneca by the end of 2020.

Previously, Bingham stated in an article published by The Lancet on October 27, 2020, 'The first generation of vaccines is likely to be imperfect, and we should be prepared that they might not prevent infection but rather reduce symptoms, and, even then, might not work for everyone or for long.'

By vaccinating people with a single dose of AZD1222 (ChAdOx1 nCoV-19), researchers are hoping to make the body recognize and develop an immune response to the coronavirus Spike protein that will help stop SARS-CoV-2 from entering human cells and therefore prevent COVID-19.

A non-peer-reviewed study published on October 27, 2020, found saliva from SARS-CoV-2-infected individuals contained epithelial cells exhibiting ACE2 expression and SARS-CoV-2 RNA. And nasopharyngeal and saliva samples found distinct viral shedding dynamics and viral burden in saliva correlated with COVID-19 symptoms, including taste loss.

This research indicates SARS-CoV-2 can infect cells in the mouth, which may spur the virus's spread to other people.

Germany's health minister Jens Spahn defended his decision to purchase additional supplies of Vekurly (remdesivir) for treating patients with COVID-19, saying Gilead's antiviral drug was useful especially early in the course of the disease, reported Reuters on November 3, 2020. Veklury is an investigational nucleotide analog with broad-spectrum antiviral activity.

Previously, Gilead Sciences, Inc. announced on October 22, 2020, that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the antiviral drug Veklury® for use in adult and pediatric patients 12 years of age and older and weighing at least 40 kilograms (about 88 pounds) for the treatment of COVID-19 requiring hospitalization.

A new, non-peer-reviewed study from the UK, found cellular (T cell) immunity against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus is likely to be present within most adults 6-months after primary infection.

The research from Public Health England and the UK Coronavirus Immunology Consortium (UK-CIC) on November 2, 2020, demonstrates robust T cell responses to SARS-CoV-2 virus peptides at this time point in all participants following asymptomatic or mild/moderate COVID-19 infection. However, a key remaining question is whether a previous infection with SARS-CoV-2 results in immunity to reinfection, and if so for how long, stated these researchers.

Dr. Shamez Ladhani, the study’s author, stated in a press release: “Cellular immunity is a complex but potentially very significant piece of the COVID-19 puzzle, and it’s important that more research be done in this area. However, early results show that T-cell responses may outlast the initial antibody response, which could have a significant impact on COVID vaccine development and immunity research."

The First Minister of Wales Mark Drakeford said in a press release on November 2, 2020, 'everyone in Wales has an important part to play in helping to prevent the spread of coronavirus and this means thinking carefully about the contact we all have with other people.'

And, 'people should only meet with their ‘bubble’ in their own home and only (2) households will be able to form a ‘bubble. If one person from either household develops COVID-19 symptoms, everyone should immediately self-isolate.'

The Welsh Government is expected to introduce a "restricted list of essential purposes" to allow people to travel between the countries which Mr. Drakeford said would be "the same broad system on both sides of the border. There will be no legal restrictions on travel within Wales for residents, but international travel should be for essential reasons only."

For the week of 17 to 23 October 2020, Wales estimated that an average of 0.86% of the community population had COVID-19 (95% credible interval: 0.41% to 1.58%).

Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada's Chief Public Health Officer, issued the following statement: “As the resurgence of COVID-19 activity continues in Canada, we are tracking a range of epidemiological indicators to monitor where the disease is most active."

"Provincial and territorial data, indicate that an average of 1,107 people with COVID-19 were being treated in hospitals each day during the most recent 7-day period (Oct 23-29), including 227 of whom were being treated in intensive care units. During the same period, there were an average of (30) COVID-19-related fatalities reported daily," stated Dr. Tam on November 1, 2020.
