WHO Emergency Committee To Discuss 2019-nCoV Outbreak Again
The Emergency Committee on the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) under the International Health Regulations (IHR 2005) will be reconvened by the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Thursday, January 30, 2020.
The Committee will advise the Director-General on whether the outbreak constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), and what recommendations should be made to manage it.
Previously, this WHO committee met on January 22, 2020.
The new virus is a coronavirus, which is a family of viruses that include the common cold, and viruses such as SARS and MERS. This new virus was temporarily named “2019-nCoV.”
The Director-General’s decision, following the Committee’s advice, will be made public on WHO’s website and via a press conference.
Recently, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus met in Beijing with the People’s Republic of China’s President Xi Jinping on January 28th, to reiterate their commitment to bring the 2019-nCoV outbreak under control.
As of January 29, 2020, the US Food and Drug Administration had not approved any preventive or therapeutic vaccine for the 2019-nCoV for use in the USA.
