13th Coronavirus Case Confirmed in California

California will process coronavirus specimens at the Viral and Rickettsial Disease Laboratory

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed another human infection of the novel coronavirus known as Covid-19.

This new case was detected near San Diago, California, and is the 13th confirmation in the USA since January 21, 2020.

Seven of those 13 cases have now been reported in the state of California.

Additionally, the CDC reported 68 specimens have been received and awaiting testing, as well as specimens in route to CDC.

This coronavirus patient was among those who landed at MCAS Miramar last week after traveling from Wuhan, China.

The adult patient was one of the few taken to UC San Diego Health for evaluation after displaying symptoms health officials said could indicate coronavirus.

The CDC said in a statement on February 10, 2020,  that it ‘is conducting a thorough contact investigation of the person who has tested positive to determine contacts and to assess if those contacts had high-risk exposures.

Previously, on February 6, 2020, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) announced that the Viral and Rickettsial Disease Laboratory in Richmond, California, will soon be able to perform testing for the novel coronavirus.

This service will provide more rapid results than currently available and help to inform public health action and medical care for people who may have been exposed to novel coronavirus.

This is important news since test results from the CDC currently take up to 7 days.

Dr. Sonia Angell, CDPH Director and State Health Officer, said in a press statement, "Providing this test in California will deliver more rapid test results to improve the care of persons who may be sick with this new virus."
